Even though many people develop Alzheimers disease as they grow older, it is not a normal part of the ageing process. The gradual loss of brain function that characterizes Alzheimer’s disease seems to be due to neural damage in which nerve fibres become tangled, and protein deposits known as plaques build up in the affected tissue.
Of importance is to ensure that the diet is free from rancid essential fatty acids and trans fatty acids. The brain is a very fatty tissue that absorbs dietary fats in any form. When we over consume unhealthy fats such as trans fats, which are commonly found in packaged foods such as biscuits or cakes; or rancid fats such as those in deep fried foods we are providing our bodies with fats of an unhealthy source. Dietary objectives need to ensure that you focus on whole foods such fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh and raw nuts and seeds, cold pressed oils, and plenty of pure water. Avoiding excessive salt, processed foods, alcohol and caffeine is also a good idea.
The Herbal Medicines Gingko and Bacopa have excellent supportive evidence to support their use for this condition and both have been shown to improve memory and brain function.
The link between Aluminium and Alzheimers disease is highly controversial, but there is evidence that the plaque development is associated with high levels of this toxic mineral. As such, it is best to avoid using cookware or deodorants containing Aluminium.
