Course Overview
Microbiome interfaces and interactions
Discover the interplay between male and female reproductive microbiomes and the broader environmental microbiomes (such as those found in the ocean, air, soil, plants, and insects) and how these ecosystems synergise to support conception.
Conception and Infection
Through an integrative lens, gain a deeper understanding of the role of infection in every stage of reproductive health, and explore approaches for restoring optimal microbial balance for improved outcomes.
Male Reproductive Microbiome
Explore the influence of microbial species on sperm production, reproductive health, and fertility, and identify how imbalances can obstruct male reproductive function.
Female Reproductive Microbiome
Each female reproductive organ contains a unique ecology of microbial species. Understanding and supporting balanced environments fosters optimal functioning and promotes reproductive health, enhancing fertility, hormonal balance, conception, and pregnancy outcomes. This module has two lectures.
Pregnancy Microbiome
All stages of pregnancy require fine-tuning of microbial balance across the mother, developing foetus, placenta, and surrounding systems. By optimising the ecology in these areas, we can positively influence outcomes and development for all involved, ensuring a healthier pregnancy and better pregnancy outcomes.
Post Partum Microbiome
The postpartum period for both mother and child is marked by distinct features that support their evolving adaptation. Microbial changes are crucial to the health and wellbeing of both parties, enabling endocrinological, metabolic, and psychological adjustments.
Breastfeeding Microbiome
Breastfeeding initiates a profound microbial exchange between mother and child, nurturing the infant’s development and deepening their lasting bond. These microbial changes play a pivotal role in shaping the infant’s long-term health, influencing neurological and psychological development, digestion, and a range of other critical processes.
Foetal and Neonatal Microbiomes
Explore the vital role microbial species play in the intricate processes of foetal and neonatal development, from shaping organ formation and immune resilience during pregnancy to influencing health outcomes in early life. This module delves into how these microbes impact growth, neurological development, and long-term wellbeing.
Treatment Approaches
In our final module, we will tie it all together by examining integrative treatment approaches designed to support individuals at every stage of their reproductive journey.

A note from Leah

The absolute foundation of all fertility and reproductive care lies in the intricate interplay and communication between reproductive microbiomes. At our core, we are shaped by microbes, and it is these microbial species that direct and influence our function, endocrinology, and biological communication. In any intimate relationship, we “share” our microbes, and it is through this microbial exchange—both in utero and postpartum, with or without breastfeeding—that we create, nurture, and develop our children.
It is with this understanding that I offer this course, to explore, reflect, consider, and strategise pathways that prioritise the health of the reproductive microbiome as the critical first step in fertility treatment. Without addressing and optimising the microbial environment, all other measures may fall short of their potential. The reproductive microbiome is not an afterthought but the foundation upon which all successful reproductive and fertility care is built.
Whilst each individual may present with unique and complex challenges, core microbial principles must be recognised as the cornerstone of treatment. The reproductive microbiomes provide the essential framework for success. Without acknowledging their crucial role, we are merely hoping for success without the guidance of the microscopic world that integrates and directs every aspect of fertility.
Join me on this journey as we delve into these foundational principles, ensuring that every step in reproductive and fertility care is deeply rooted in a microbial-first approach, setting the stage for truly effective and integrated care.
